Frequency and distribution of sister chromatid exchanges in human peripheral lymphocytes. 1976

B Alhadeff, and M M Cohen

The frequency and distribution of sister chromatid exchanges (SCE) were examined in a population of 10 normal individuals (five males and five females) and compared with those in patients with various numerical and structural chromosomal aberrations. Statistically significant differences within each group were observed among the normal subjects as well as among patients with similar cytogenetic aberrations. A consistent nonrandom distribution of SCE, with regard to chromosome length, was demonstrated, with a significant increase of SCE in the centromere region of some chromosomes.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008214 Lymphocytes White blood cells formed in the body's lymphoid tissue. The nucleus is round or ovoid with coarse, irregularly clumped chromatin while the cytoplasm is typically pale blue with azurophilic (if any) granules. Most lymphocytes can be classified as either T or B (with subpopulations of each), or NATURAL KILLER CELLS. Lymphoid Cells,Cell, Lymphoid,Cells, Lymphoid,Lymphocyte,Lymphoid Cell

D002843 Chromatin The material of CHROMOSOMES. It is a complex of DNA; HISTONES; and nonhistone proteins (CHROMOSOMAL PROTEINS, NON-HISTONE) found within the nucleus of a cell. Chromatins
D002875 Chromosomes In a prokaryotic cell or in the nucleus of a eukaryotic cell, a structure consisting of or containing DNA which carries the genetic information essential to the cell. (From Singleton & Sainsbury, Dictionary of Microbiology and Molecular Biology, 2d ed) Chromosome
