The relationship between social support and parental adjustment to low-birth-weight infants. 1984

Twenty-four parents whose children were hospitalized for low birthweight in a neonatal intensive care unit participated in research interviews. Interviewers assessed the availability of social support and the parents' capacity to use these supports during their infant's hospitalization and after discharge. The overall adjustment of parents to their child was then rated. Findings indicate a positive significant relationship between support and adjustment.
