Fatty acid profiles of Streptococcus mutans NCTC 10832 grown on synthetic mediun with sucrose, fructose or sorbitol. 1976

D B Drucker, and J Greenman, and T H Melville

Streptococcus mutans NCTC 10832 was grown on synthetic medium in a chemostat, using various major carbon sources, viz, sorbitol, fructose and sucrose. Freeze-dried cells were methylated and the methyl esters analysed by GLC. The fatty acid profiles obtained showed small quantitative change with different sugars, sucrose concentrations and types of growth.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D005227 Fatty Acids Organic, monobasic acids derived from hydrocarbons by the equivalent of oxidation of a methyl group to an alcohol, aldehyde, and then acid. Fatty acids are saturated and unsaturated (FATTY ACIDS, UNSATURATED). D005632 Fructose A monosaccharide in sweet fruits and honey that is soluble in water, alcohol, or ether. It is used as a preservative and an intravenous infusion in parenteral feeding. D013012 Sorbitol A polyhydric alcohol with about half the sweetness of sucrose. Sorbitol occurs naturally and is also produced synthetically from glucose. It was formerly used as a diuretic and may still be used as a laxative and in irrigating solutions for some surgical procedures. It is also used in many manufacturing processes, as a pharmaceutical aid, and in several research applications. Glucitol,Medevac,Sorbilax,Yal,klysma Sorbit
D013291 Streptococcus A genus of gram-positive, coccoid bacteria whose organisms occur in pairs or chains. No endospores are produced. Many species exist as commensals or parasites on man or animals with some being highly pathogenic. A few species are saprophytes and occur in the natural environment.
D013295 Streptococcus mutans A polysaccharide-producing species of STREPTOCOCCUS isolated from human dental plaque.
D013395 Sucrose A nonreducing disaccharide composed of GLUCOSE and FRUCTOSE linked via their anomeric carbons. It is obtained commercially from SUGARCANE, sugar beet (BETA VULGARIS), and other plants and used extensively as a food and a sweetener. Saccharose
