Two new tripodal peptide ligands with histidine side chains have been synthesized and were shown to form stable zinc(II) complexes. Their NMR and mass spectra indicate a structure that is analogous to the active center of carbonic anhydrase. Both the ligands and the zinc complexes were titrated potentiometrically in order to obtain the pKa values for the coordinated water of the zinc complexes; due to the low solubility of the complexes only estimates could be obtained.

D010455 Peptides Members of the class of compounds composed of AMINO ACIDS joined together by peptide bonds between adjacent amino acids into linear, branched or cyclical structures. OLIGOPEPTIDES are composed of approximately 2-12 amino acids. Polypeptides are composed of approximately 13 or more amino acids. PROTEINS are considered to be larger versions of peptides that can form into complex structures such as ENZYMES and RECEPTORS. Peptide,Polypeptide,Polypeptides
D002256 Carbonic Anhydrases A family of zinc-containing enzymes that catalyze the reversible hydration of carbon dioxide. They play an important role in the transport of CARBON DIOXIDE from the tissues to the LUNG. EC 4.2.1.1. Carbonate Dehydratase,Carbonic Anhydrase,Anhydrases, Carbonic,Dehydratase, Carbonate

D015032 Zinc A metallic element of atomic number 30 and atomic weight 65.38. It is a necessary trace element in the diet, forming an essential part of many enzymes, and playing an important role in protein synthesis and in cell division. Zinc deficiency is associated with ANEMIA, short stature, HYPOGONADISM, impaired WOUND HEALING, and geophagia. It is known by the symbol Zn.
D017186 Titrimetry The determination of the concentration of a given component in solution (the analyte) by addition of a liquid reagent of known strength (the titrant) until an equivalence point is reached (when the reactants are present in stoichiometric proportions). Often an indicator is added to make the equivalence point visible (e.g., a change in color).
