OBJECTIVE We investigated anterior segment structures in normal human eyes by ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM). METHODS UBM high frequency transducer (50-100mHz) was used to measure the anterior segment of normal human eyes. RESULTS Cornea, sclera, iris, lens, ciliary body, anterior chamber, posterior chamber and extraocular muscles can be visualized by UBM. CONCLUSIONS UBM is a new noninvasive method for imaging the anterior segment structures under living condition, and supplementary to the present existing imaging methods that have shortcomings in dynamic observation of the anterior ocular structures under such condition. As the frequency of the transducer is rather high, the imaging depth is limited to 4-5 mm, thus only the anterior ocular structures can be viewed.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008297 Male Males
D008853 Microscopy The use of instrumentation and techniques for visualizing material and details that cannot be seen by the unaided eye. It is usually done by enlarging images, transmitted by light or electron beams, with optical or magnetic lenses that magnify the entire image field. With scanning microscopy, images are generated by collecting output from the specimen in a point-by-point fashion, on a magnified scale, as it is scanned by a narrow beam of light or electrons, a laser, a conductive probe, or a topographical probe.
