BACKGROUND Mesenteric venous thrombosis is a rare cause of acute abdominal pain that may be the result of coagulation abnormalities. METHODS Four consecutive patients with mesenteric venous thrombosis underwent haematological evaluation. RESULTS All four had activated protein C resistance resulting from a single mutation in the gene coding for coagulation factor V. Three had surgery; in one patient the diagnosis was made by ultrasonography. One of the patients who had surgery died but the other three survived and were treated with long-term anticoagulation. CONCLUSIONS Activated protein C resistance may be an important pathogenetic factor in primary mesen-teric vein thrombosis.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008297 Male Males
D008642 Mesenteric Veins Veins which return blood from the intestines; the inferior mesenteric vein empties into the splenic vein, the superior mesenteric vein joins the splenic vein to form the portal vein. Mesenteric Vein,Vein, Mesenteric,Veins, Mesenteric
D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D009154 Mutation Any detectable and heritable change in the genetic material that causes a change in the GENOTYPE and which is transmitted to daughter cells and to succeeding generations. Mutations
D005165 Factor V Heat- and storage-labile plasma glycoprotein which accelerates the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin in blood coagulation. Factor V accomplishes this by forming a complex with factor Xa, phospholipid, and calcium (prothrombinase complex). Deficiency of factor V leads to Owren's disease. Coagulation Factor V,Proaccelerin,AC Globulin,Blood Coagulation Factor V,Factor 5,Factor Five,Factor Pi,Factor V, Coagulation
D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D000328 Adult A person having attained full growth or maturity. Adults are of 19 through 44 years of age. For a person between 19 and 24 years of age, YOUNG ADULT is available. Adults
D000368 Aged A person 65 years of age or older. For a person older than 79 years, AGED, 80 AND OVER is available. Elderly
D015746 Abdominal Pain Sensation of discomfort, distress, or agony in the abdominal region. Colicky Pain,Abdominal Pains,Colicky Pains,Pain, Abdominal,Pain, Colicky,Pains, Abdominal,Pains, Colicky
D020016 Activated Protein C Resistance A hemostatic disorder characterized by a poor anticoagulant response to activated protein C (APC). The activated form of Factor V (Factor Va) is more slowly degraded by activated protein C. Factor V Leiden mutation (R506Q) is the most common cause of APC resistance. APC Resistance,Resistance, APC
