BACKGROUND Failure of the normal expansion of plasma volume in the mother is associated with impaired fetal growth and pre-eclampsia. OBJECTIVE The objective of this review was to assess the effects of plasma volume expansion for suspected impaired fetal growth. METHODS We searched the Cochrane Pregnancy and Childbirth Group trials register and the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register. Date of last search: December 1999. METHODS Randomized or quasi-randomized trials of plasma volume expansion compared to no plasma volume expansion in women with suspected impaired fetal growth. METHODS Trial quality was assessed. RESULTS No studies were included. CONCLUSIONS There is not enough evidence to evaluate the use of plasma volume expansion for suspected impaired fetal growth.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D010952 Plasma Substitutes Any liquid used to replace blood plasma, usually a saline solution, often with serum albumins, dextrans or other preparations. These substances do not enhance the oxygen- carrying capacity of blood, but merely replace the volume. They are also used to treat dehydration.
