[Absecence of the antidepressant action of lithium under clinical and experimental conditions]. 1976

I N Mikhalenko, and L P Kiseleva, and I P Lapin

During a long-term treatment by lihtium carbonate of 200 patients with manic-depressive psychosis the authors did not find any antidepressive effect. In some cases administration of lithium during the depressive phases aggravated the depressive symptomatology, prolonged the duration of the phase, increased the therapeutical resistance. In experiments with lithium on animals there were no typical traits for an antidepressive effect: adrenopositive and serotoninopositive action.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007099 Imipramine The prototypical tricyclic antidepressant. It has been used in major depression, dysthymia, bipolar depression, attention-deficit disorders, agoraphobia, and panic disorders. It has less sedative effect than some other members of this therapeutic group. Imidobenzyle,Imizin,4,4'-Methylenebis(3-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid)-3-(10,11-dihydro-5H-dibenzo(b,f)azepin-5-yl)-N,N-dimethyl-1-propanamine (1:2),Imipramine Hydrochloride,Imipramine Monohydrochloride,Imipramine Pamoate,Janimine,Melipramine,Norchlorimipramine,Pryleugan,Tofranil
D008094 Lithium An element in the alkali metals family. It has the atomic symbol Li, atomic number 3, and atomic weight [6.938; 6.997]. Salts of lithium are used in treating BIPOLAR DISORDER. Lithium-7,Lithium 7

D010095 Oxotremorine A non-hydrolyzed muscarinic agonist used as a research tool. Oxytremorine
D010276 Parasympatholytics Agents that inhibit the actions of the parasympathetic nervous system. The major group of drugs used therapeutically for this purpose is the MUSCARINIC ANTAGONISTS. D012110 Reserpine An alkaloid found in the roots of Rauwolfia serpentina and R. vomitoria. Reserpine inhibits the uptake of norepinephrine into storage vesicles resulting in depletion of catecholamines and serotonin from central and peripheral axon terminals. It has been used as an antihypertensive and an antipsychotic as well as a research tool, but its adverse effects limit its clinical use.
