OBJECTIVE Idiopathic polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (IPCV) is a distinct clinical entity characterized by an edematous maculopathy and typical choroidal vascular change. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the use of optical coherence tomography (OCT) for diagnosing of this disease. METHODS 4 patients affected by IPVC (mean age 71-84 years) underwent biomicroscopy with a three mirror conctact lens, fluorescein angiography (FA), indocyanine green angiography (ICGA) and OCT (Humphrey Zeiss) scan. RESULTS in all 4 cases OCT tomograms acquired at the location of the typical choroidal abnormalities demonstrated by ICGA, revealed a characteristic hyper-reflectivity in the choroidal layers. CONCLUSIONS ICGA is essential to diagnose IPVC, but OCT may be able to identify characteristic reflectivity patterns.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D010857 Pigment Epithelium of Eye The layer of pigment-containing epithelial cells in the RETINA; the CILIARY BODY; and the IRIS in the eye. Eye Pigment Epithelium
D012163 Retinal Detachment Separation of the inner layers of the retina (neural retina) from the pigment epithelium. Retinal detachment occurs more commonly in men than in women, in eyes with degenerative myopia, in aging and in aphakia. It may occur after an uncomplicated cataract extraction, but it is seen more often if vitreous humor has been lost during surgery. D002829 Choroid The thin, highly vascular membrane covering most of the posterior of the eye between the RETINA and SCLERA. Choriocapillaris,Haller Layer,Haller's Layer,Sattler Layer,Sattler's Layer,Choroids
D003937 Diagnosis, Differential Determination of which one of two or more diseases or conditions a patient is suffering from by systematically comparing and contrasting results of diagnostic measures. Diagnoses, Differential,Differential Diagnoses,Differential Diagnosis
D005451 Fluorescein Angiography Visualization of a vascular system after intravenous injection of a fluorescein solution. The images may be photographed or televised. It is used especially in studying the retinal and uveal vasculature. D005654 Fundus Oculi The concave interior of the eye, consisting of the retina, the choroid, the sclera, the optic disk, and blood vessels, seen by means of the ophthalmoscope. (Cline et al., Dictionary of Visual Science, 4th ed) Fundus of the Eye,Ocular Fundus,Fundus, Ocular

D000368 Aged A person 65 years of age or older. For a person older than 79 years, AGED, 80 AND OVER is available. Elderly
D000369 Aged, 80 and over Persons 80 years of age and older. Oldest Old
D014054 Tomography Imaging methods that result in sharp images of objects located on a chosen plane and blurred images located above or below the plane. Tomographies
