Erythrocyte transketolase activity in adult Ghanaian subjects. 1975

J D Watson, and D Y Dako

The erythrocyte transketolase activity, and the effect of thiamin pyrophosphate stimulation (TPP effect) on this enzyme, was determined in 263 adult Ghanaian subjects who included normal males and females, male labourers known to consume a diet high in carbohydrate, diabetics and pregnant women. Using the guideline that a TPP effect of greater than 25% indicates thiamin deficiency, it was found that a significant proportion of apparently healthy subjects (36%-47%) may be regarded as thiamin deficient. The results are discussed in the light of similar studies carried out by other workers.

D013832 Thiamine Deficiency A nutritional condition produced by a deficiency of THIAMINE in the diet, characterized by anorexia, irritability, and weight loss. Later, patients experience weakness, peripheral neuropathy, headache, and tachycardia. In addition to being caused by a poor diet, thiamine deficiency in the United States most commonly occurs as a result of alcoholism, since ethanol interferes with thiamine absorption. In countries relying on polished rice as a dietary staple, BERIBERI prevalence is very high. D013835 Thiamine Pyrophosphate The coenzyme form of Vitamin B1 present in many animal tissues. It is a required intermediate in the PYRUVATE DEHYDROGENASE COMPLEX and the KETOGLUTARATE DEHYDROGENASE COMPLEX. Cocarboxylase,Thiamine Diphosphate,Berolase,Pyrophosphate, Thiamine
D014174 Transketolase An enzyme of the transferase class that catalyzes the conversion of sedoheptulose 7-phosphate and D-glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate to D-ribose 5-phosphate and D-xylulose 5-phosphate in the PENTOSE PHOSPHATE PATHWAY. (Dorland, 27th ed) EC 2.2.1.1. Apotransketolase,Glycolaldehydetransferase
