The ability of leukemic cells to differentiate to mature dendritic cells (DCs) was investigated in six acute myelomonocytic or monocytic leukemia cases. It was found that CD14 positive cells were more efficiently changed to CD83 positive mature typed DCs with granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF)/interleukin-4 (IL-4) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) compared with CD14 negative cells. Such leukemia derived DCs expressed a sufficient level of costimulatory molecules (CD80 and CD86), and were shown to be monoclonal based on an the X-inactivation analysis. They also stimulated not only allo- but auto-T lymphocytes, which thereafter became cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs).

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007121 Immunocompetence The ability of lymphoid cells to mount a humoral or cellular immune response when challenged by antigen. Competence, Immunologic,Immunologic Competence,Immunological Competence,Competence, Immunological
D007136 Immunoglobulins Multi-subunit proteins which function in IMMUNITY. They are produced by B LYMPHOCYTES from the IMMUNOGLOBULIN GENES. They are comprised of two heavy (IMMUNOGLOBULIN HEAVY CHAINS) and two light chains (IMMUNOGLOBULIN LIGHT CHAINS) with additional ancillary polypeptide chains depending on their isoforms. The variety of isoforms include monomeric or polymeric forms, and transmembrane forms (B-CELL ANTIGEN RECEPTORS) or secreted forms (ANTIBODIES). They are divided by the amino acid sequence of their heavy chains into five classes (IMMUNOGLOBULIN A; IMMUNOGLOBULIN D; IMMUNOGLOBULIN E; IMMUNOGLOBULIN G; IMMUNOGLOBULIN M) and various subclasses. D007948 Leukemia, Monocytic, Acute An acute myeloid leukemia in which 80% or more of the leukemic cells are of monocytic lineage including monoblasts, promonocytes, and MONOCYTES. D007959 Lymphocyte Culture Test, Mixed Measure of histocompatibility at the HL-A locus. Peripheral blood lymphocytes from two individuals are mixed together in tissue culture for several days. Lymphocytes from incompatible individuals will stimulate each other to proliferate significantly (measured by tritiated thymidine uptake) whereas those from compatible individuals will not. In the one-way MLC test, the lymphocytes from one of the individuals are inactivated (usually by treatment with MITOMYCIN or radiation) thereby allowing only the untreated remaining population of cells to proliferate in response to foreign histocompatibility antigens.
