The effect of an intraduodenal elemental diet on pancreatic secretion. 1975

The effect of an elemental diet on canine exocrine pancreatic secretion was evaluated by infusing an elemental diet into the duodenum of dogs and monitoring the output of the pancreas. The stimulatory properties of the elemental diet were compared with a nearly equimolar dose of an L-form neutral amino acid, 0.16 normal hydrochloric acid, and 2 units per kilogram per hour of exogenous cholecystokinin. Intraduodenal infusion of elemental diet produced significant increases in pancreatic volume and protein output. These changes were similar to those produced by the amino acid solution and suggest that the stimulatory properties of the elemental diet are primarily due to the amino acid content. The results of the this study suggest that elemental diets stimulate the duodental mucosa to secrete cholecystokinin which stimulates the exocrine pancreas. Elemental diets administered in such a manner that the substance passes through the duodenum would not theoretically be a satisfactory method of providing calories to patients with acute pancreatitis.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007263 Infusions, Parenteral The administration of liquid medication, nutrient, or other fluid through some other route than the alimentary canal, usually over minutes or hours, either by gravity flow or often by infusion pumping. D009994 Osmolar Concentration The concentration of osmotically active particles in solution expressed in terms of osmoles of solute per liter of solution. Osmolality is expressed in terms of osmoles of solute per kilogram of solvent. D010179 Pancreas A nodular organ in the ABDOMEN that contains a mixture of ENDOCRINE GLANDS and EXOCRINE GLANDS. The small endocrine portion consists of the ISLETS OF LANGERHANS secreting a number of hormones into the blood stream. The large exocrine portion (EXOCRINE PANCREAS) is a compound acinar gland that secretes several digestive enzymes into the pancreatic ductal system that empties into the DUODENUM.
D010189 Pancreatic Juice The fluid containing digestive enzymes secreted by the pancreas in response to food in the duodenum. Juice, Pancreatic,Juices, Pancreatic,Pancreatic Juices
D010649 Phenylalanine An essential aromatic amino acid that is a precursor of MELANIN; DOPAMINE; noradrenalin (NOREPINEPHRINE), and THYROXINE. Endorphenyl,L-Phenylalanine,Phenylalanine, L-Isomer,L-Isomer Phenylalanine,Phenylalanine, L Isomer
D011506 Proteins Linear POLYPEPTIDES that are synthesized on RIBOSOMES and may be further modified, crosslinked, cleaved, or assembled into complex proteins with several subunits. The specific sequence of AMINO ACIDS determines the shape the polypeptide will take, during PROTEIN FOLDING, and the function of the protein. D002766 Cholecystokinin A peptide, of about 33 amino acids, secreted by the upper INTESTINAL MUCOSA and also found in the central nervous system. It causes gallbladder contraction, release of pancreatic exocrine (or digestive) enzymes, and affects other gastrointestinal functions. Cholecystokinin may be the mediator of satiety. Pancreozymin,CCK-33,Cholecystokinin 33,Uropancreozymin
D004032 Diet Regular course of eating and drinking adopted by a person or animal. Diets
D004285 Dogs The domestic dog, Canis familiaris, comprising about 400 breeds, of the carnivore family CANIDAE. They are worldwide in distribution and live in association with people. (Walker's Mammals of the World, 5th ed, p1065) Canis familiaris,Dog
D004386 Duodenum The shortest and widest portion of the SMALL INTESTINE adjacent to the PYLORUS of the STOMACH. It is named for having the length equal to about the width of 12 fingers. Duodenums
