Relationship between serum and seminal plasma prolactin in bonnet monkeys. 1979

A R Sheth, and K S Hurkadly, and S Jayaraman

The relationship between serum and seminal plasma concentration of prolactin were investigated in four adult bonnet monkeys. Hyperprolactenemia induced by acute and chronic treatment with chlorpromazine showed significantly higher prolactin levels in seminal plasma on 8th and 16th day respectively, by which time the serum prolactin levels have already reached pretreatment levels. The study suggests that it may be possible to affect the sperm fertilizing capacity by pharmacologically affecting serum prolactin concentrations.

D011388 Prolactin A lactogenic hormone secreted by the adenohypophysis (PITUITARY GLAND, ANTERIOR). It is a polypeptide of approximately 23 kD. Besides its major action on lactation, in some species prolactin exerts effects on reproduction, maternal behavior, fat metabolism, immunomodulation and osmoregulation. Prolactin receptors are present in the mammary gland, hypothalamus, liver, ovary, testis, and prostate. D002746 Chlorpromazine The prototypical phenothiazine antipsychotic drug. Like the other drugs in this class chlorpromazine's antipsychotic actions are thought to be due to long-term adaptation by the brain to blocking DOPAMINE RECEPTORS. Chlorpromazine has several other actions and therapeutic uses, including as an antiemetic and in the treatment of intractable hiccup. D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA.
