[The effect of human cytomegalovirus on human marrow granulocyte/macrophage progenitor]. 1999

OBJECTIVE To investigate whether the suppression of CFU-GM is caused directly by human cytomegalovirus(HCMV). METHODS The effect of HCMV AD 169 strain on CFU-GM growth was assayed in vitro and HCMV AD 169 DNA in CFU-GM was detected by in situ PCR(ISPCR). RESULTS Significant inhibition of CFU-GM was observed when HCMV AD 169 containing fluid was diluted to 2 x 10(5) pfu/ml and 2 x 10(6) pfu/ml (P < 0.01). The suppression was in a dose-dependent fashion. HCMV AD 169-DNA was detected by ISPCR on the nuclear of CFU-GM. CONCLUSIONS HCMV might cause suppression of CFU-GM growth by direct infection.
