[A short history of Dutch medical learning in Shizuoka Prefecture in the Edo Period]. 1992

During the Edo Period, a powerful feudal lord did not exist in Shizuoka Prefecture. In place of an influential lord, the highway "Tōkaido" controlled the district culture. Famous doctors frequently came and stayed at inns or stopped at their friends' houses. They were good friends with the general practitioners and related much news of medicine to the sons of practitioners. The sons went to Edo, Kyoto or Nagasaki and studied Dutch medicine. Their selection of masters was quite free. They put their heart into medicine. After studying, most of them returned to their homes.
