Successful carotid endarterectomy for cerebrovascular insufficiency. Nineteen-year follow-up. 1975

This is believed to be the first successful case of thromboendarterectomy for cerebrovascular insufficiency caused by atherosclerotic occlusion of the carotid artery, as well as the longest follow-up study. At the time of the patient's death from coronary occlusion, 19 years after operation, he had no cerebrovascular symptoms, and there was clinical evidence of maintenance of the restored circulation in the carotid artery.

D002537	Intracranial Arteriosclerosis	Vascular diseases characterized by thickening and hardening of the walls of ARTERIES inside the SKULL. There are three subtypes: (1) atherosclerosis with fatty deposits in the ARTERIAL INTIMA; (2) Monckeberg's sclerosis with calcium deposits in the media and (3) arteriolosclerosis involving the small caliber arteries.
