OBJECTIVE To determine the efficacy of Nifedipine on postpartum blood Loss in patients with Pregnancy Induced Hypertension (PIH). METHODS 64 cases of PIH were randomly divided into study group (n = 32) and control group (n = 32). Before labor Nifedipine 10 mg-20 mg was given three time daily for all cases. In study group Nifedipine was taken orally every 6 hours during the labor course until the end of second stage. In control group Nifedipine was not given in the labor stages. The postpartum blood loss was collected and measured carefully within 2 hours after delivery. RESULTS The amount of pastpartum hemorrhage was (359.1 +/- 136.6) ml in study group which was significantly higher than that of control group (268.5 +/- 110.7) ml P < 0.01. The postpartum hemorrhage rate in study and control group was 43.75% and 18.75% respectively. The difference was statistically significant (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS During labor using Nifedipine for PIH cases can increase the amount of postpartum blood loss and rate of postpartum hemorrnage.
