Serum enzyme, bilirubin, uric acid, and cholesterol concentration changes during 7 days of total parenteral nutrition. 1979

M Georgieff, and E M Georgieff, and P Osswald, and H Lutz

Lactic dehydrogenase, glutamic oxalacetic transaminase, and alkaline phosphatase remained within normal limits during 7 days of total parenteral nutrition. Five patients showed a rise of total bilirubin up to 1.1 mg/100 ml on the fifth postoperative day, with no change in serum enzymes. Uric acid concentration fell continuously up to the third postoperative day (but within normal limits) and remained decreased until the end of infusion. During the preoperative nutrition period and after surgical intervention, cholesterol concentration showed a steep fall. Very low cholesterol concentrations can cause an alteration of erythrocyte membrane synthesis and should, therefore, be avoided.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007700 Kinetics The rate dynamics in chemical or physical systems.
D007770 L-Lactate Dehydrogenase A tetrameric enzyme that, along with the coenzyme NAD+, catalyzes the interconversion of LACTATE and PYRUVATE. In vertebrates, genes for three different subunits (LDH-A, LDH-B and LDH-C) exist. Lactate Dehydrogenase,Dehydrogenase, L-Lactate,Dehydrogenase, Lactate,L Lactate Dehydrogenase
D010288 Parenteral Nutrition The administering of nutrients for assimilation and utilization by a patient who cannot maintain adequate nutrition by enteral feeding alone. Nutrients are administered by a route other than the alimentary canal (e.g., intravenously, subcutaneously). Intravenous Feeding,Nutrition, Parenteral,Parenteral Feeding,Feeding, Intravenous,Feeding, Parenteral,Feedings, Intravenous,Feedings, Parenteral,Intravenous Feedings,Parenteral Feedings
D010289 Parenteral Nutrition, Total The delivery of nutrients for assimilation and utilization by a patient whose sole source of nutrients is via solutions administered intravenously, subcutaneously, or by some other non-alimentary route. The basic components of TPN solutions are protein hydrolysates or free amino acid mixtures, monosaccharides, and electrolytes. Components are selected for their ability to reverse catabolism, promote anabolism, and build structural proteins. D002784 Cholesterol The principal sterol of all higher animals, distributed in body tissues, especially the brain and spinal cord, and in animal fats and oils. Epicholesterol
D005969 Glutamate Dehydrogenase An enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of L-glutamate and water to 2-oxoglutarate and NH3 in the presence of NAD+. (From Enzyme Nomenclature, 1992) EC 1.4.1.2. Dehydrogenase, Glutamate
D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D000469 Alkaline Phosphatase An enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of an orthophosphoric monoester and water to an alcohol and orthophosphate. EC 3.1.3.1.
