[Masticatory muscles. Part IX. Pain in the jaw muscles]. 1998

Masticatory muscle pain is considered as a local expression of myofascial pain. The relationship with Myofascial Pain Syndrome and Fibromyalgia is not well understood. Muscle pain is generated through nociceptors served by small-diameter fibres, where processes of sensitization and neurogenic inflammation are important. In contrast to the 'vicious circle' concept, limitation of movement and loss of muscular power seem to be the result of the pain (pain-adaptation model). The diagnosis of muscle pain is made by algometry, while treatment should be simple, reversible and non-invasive.

D005356 Fibromyalgia A common nonarticular rheumatic syndrome characterized by myalgia and multiple points of focal muscle tenderness to palpation (trigger points). Muscle pain is typically aggravated by inactivity or exposure to cold. This condition is often associated with general symptoms, such as sleep disturbances, fatigue, stiffness, HEADACHES, and occasionally DEPRESSION. There is significant overlap between fibromyalgia and the chronic fatigue syndrome (FATIGUE SYNDROME, CHRONIC). Fibromyalgia may arise as a primary or secondary disease process. It is most frequent in females aged 20 to 50 years.
