Addis Ababa is situated at an altitude of approximately 8500 ft and has a barometric pressure of close to 570 mmHg. Arterial blood gas values during the administration of anaesthesia with spontaneous ventilation have not been extensively studied. During the period January to July 1993, oxygen saturation was determined in 46 unpremedicated patients prior to minor surgery. Following this, patients received diazepam 0.1-0.2 mg/kg and ketamine 2 mg/kg during which a clear airway was maintained and peripheral oximetry was monitored continuously. The SpO2 was recorded for each patient at one minute intervals until 5 minutes and thence at 7, 10 and 15 minutes. The average SpO2 decreased below 90% at 2, 3 and 4 minutes and of the 46 patients, 8 (17.3%) required additional oxygen when their saturation fell below 80%. It is concluded that airway management and supplemental oxygen should be available when using this technique.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007649 Ketamine A cyclohexanone derivative used for induction of anesthesia. Its mechanism of action is not well understood, but ketamine can block NMDA receptors (RECEPTORS, N-METHYL-D-ASPARTATE) and may interact with sigma receptors. 2-(2-Chlorophenyl)-2-(methylamino)cyclohexanone,CI-581,Calipsol,Calypsol,Kalipsol,Ketalar,Ketamine Hydrochloride,Ketanest,Ketaset,CI 581,CI581
D008297 Male Males
D010100 Oxygen An element with atomic symbol O, atomic number 8, and atomic weight [15.99903; 15.99977]. It is the most abundant element on earth and essential for respiration. Dioxygen,Oxygen-16,Oxygen 16
D002648 Child A person 6 to 12 years of age. An individual 2 to 5 years old is CHILD, PRESCHOOL. Children
D003975 Diazepam A benzodiazepine with anticonvulsant, anxiolytic, sedative, muscle relaxant, and amnesic properties and a long duration of action. Its actions are mediated by enhancement of GAMMA-AMINOBUTYRIC ACID activity. 7-Chloro-1,3-dihydro-1-methyl-5-phenyl-2H-1,4-benzodiazepin-2-one,Apaurin,Diazemuls,Faustan,Relanium,Seduxen,Sibazon,Stesolid,Valium
D005002 Ethiopia An independent state in eastern Africa. Ethiopia is located in the Horn of Africa and is bordered on the north and northeast by Eritrea, on the east by Djibouti and Somalia, on the south by Kenya, and on the west and southwest by Sudan. Its capital is Addis Ababa. Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia

D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D000368 Aged A person 65 years of age or older. For a person older than 79 years, AGED, 80 AND OVER is available. Elderly
D000778 Anesthetics, Dissociative Intravenous anesthetics that induce a state of sedation, immobility, amnesia, and marked analgesia. Subjects may experience a strong feeling of dissociation from the environment. The condition produced is similar to NEUROLEPTANALGESIA, but is brought about by the administration of a single drug.
