Diagnosis of neuroblastoma by electron microscopy of bone marrow aspirates. 1975

B Mackay, and S R Masse, and O Y King, and J Butler

Three patients are reported in whom the diagnosis of neuroblastoma was made following electron microscopy of a bone marrow aspirate. The ultrastructure of neuroblastoma cells is distinctive, and they can be distinguished by electron microscopy from cells of the other tumors with which neuroblastoma is often confused by light microscopy. The rapidity with which the diagnosis can be obtained through use of this procedure argues for its adoption in any patient in whom the diagnosis is suspected and who has tumor cells in bone marrow. Early initiation of appropriate therapy is made possible, and elaborate diagnostic procedures may be avoided.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008297 Male Males
D008854 Microscopy, Electron Microscopy using an electron beam, instead of light, to visualize the sample, thereby allowing much greater magnification. The interactions of ELECTRONS with specimens are used to provide information about the fine structure of that specimen. In TRANSMISSION ELECTRON MICROSCOPY the reactions of the electrons that are transmitted through the specimen are imaged. In SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY an electron beam falls at a non-normal angle on the specimen and the image is derived from the reactions occurring above the plane of the specimen. Electron Microscopy
D009362 Neoplasm Metastasis The transfer of a neoplasm from one organ or part of the body to another remote from the primary site. Metastase,Metastasis,Metastases, Neoplasm,Metastasis, Neoplasm,Neoplasm Metastases,Metastases
D009447 Neuroblastoma A common neoplasm of early childhood arising from neural crest cells in the sympathetic nervous system, and characterized by diverse clinical behavior, ranging from spontaneous remission to rapid metastatic progression and death. This tumor is the most common intraabdominal malignancy of childhood, but it may also arise from thorax, neck, or rarely occur in the central nervous system. Histologic features include uniform round cells with hyperchromatic nuclei arranged in nests and separated by fibrovascular septa. Neuroblastomas may be associated with the opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome. D001853 Bone Marrow The soft tissue filling the cavities of bones. Bone marrow exists in two types, yellow and red. Yellow marrow is found in the large cavities of large bones and consists mostly of fat cells and a few primitive blood cells. Red marrow is a hematopoietic tissue and is the site of production of erythrocytes and granular leukocytes. Bone marrow is made up of a framework of connective tissue containing branching fibers with the frame being filled with marrow cells. D001856 Bone Marrow Examination Removal of bone marrow and evaluation of its histologic picture. Examination, Bone Marrow,Bone Marrow Examinations,Examinations, Bone Marrow
D001859 Bone Neoplasms Tumors or cancer located in bone tissue or specific BONES. Bone Cancer,Cancer of Bone,Cancer of the Bone,Neoplasms, Bone,Bone Neoplasm,Neoplasm, Bone
D002648 Child A person 6 to 12 years of age. An individual 2 to 5 years old is CHILD, PRESCHOOL. Children
D002675 Child, Preschool A child between the ages of 2 and 5. Children, Preschool,Preschool Child,Preschool Children
