Ultrasonography of the thyroid gland. 1975

M Miskin, and I B Rosen, and P G Walfish

Ultrasound has proven to be helpful in the assessment of the thyroid gland and in particular of solitary hypofunctioning thyroid nodules. In 94% of cases differentiation can be made between solid and cystic lesions. This information is of importance to the clinician in deciding on the course of therapy. The ability to accurately measure thyroid gland size, the size of individual nodules, and to follow these with serial measurements during therapy, is also useful. Gray scale ultrasound may provide the additional benefit of differentiating between benign and malignant thyroid tumore. More study of this new technique is necessary before any final conclusions can be drawn as to its accuracy in the diagnosis of thyroid carcinoma.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D002908 Chronic Disease Diseases which have one or more of the following characteristics: they are permanent, leave residual disability, are caused by nonreversible pathological alteration, require special training of the patient for rehabilitation, or may be expected to require a long period of supervision, observation, or care (Dictionary of Health Services Management, 2d ed). For epidemiological studies chronic disease often includes HEART DISEASES; STROKE; CANCER; and diabetes (DIABETES MELLITUS, TYPE 2). D003560 Cysts Any fluid-filled closed cavity or sac that is lined by an EPITHELIUM. Cysts can be of normal, abnormal, non-neoplastic, or neoplastic tissues. Cyst
D006042 Goiter Enlargement of the THYROID GLAND that may increase from about 20 grams to hundreds of grams in human adults. Goiter is observed in individuals with normal thyroid function (euthyroidism), thyroid deficiency (HYPOTHYROIDISM), or hormone overproduction (HYPERTHYROIDISM). Goiter may be congenital or acquired, sporadic or endemic (GOITER, ENDEMIC). Goiters

D013966 Thyroiditis Inflammatory diseases of the THYROID GLAND. Thyroiditis can be classified into acute (THYROIDITIS, SUPPURATIVE), subacute (granulomatous and lymphocytic), chronic fibrous (Riedel's), chronic lymphocytic (HASHIMOTO DISEASE), transient (POSTPARTUM THYROIDITIS), and other AUTOIMMUNE THYROIDITIS subtypes.
