Persistence and reactivation of Rickettsia tsutsugamushi infections in laboratory mice. 1979

A Shirai, and T C Chan, and E Gan, and D L Huxsoll

The persistence of R. tsutsugamushi in tissues of experimentally infected mice for 565 days was demonstrated. Reactivation of apparently dormant infections was accomplished by inoculating the mice with a heterologous strain of the organism or treatment with cyclophosphamide.

D007165 Immunosuppression Therapy Deliberate prevention or diminution of the host's immune response. It may be nonspecific as in the administration of immunosuppressive agents (drugs or radiation) or by lymphocyte depletion or may be specific as in desensitization or the simultaneous administration of antigen and immunosuppressive drugs. D003520 Cyclophosphamide Precursor of an alkylating nitrogen mustard antineoplastic and immunosuppressive agent that must be activated in the LIVER to form the active aldophosphamide. It has been used in the treatment of LYMPHOMA and LEUKEMIA. Its side effect, ALOPECIA, has been used for defleecing sheep. Cyclophosphamide may also cause sterility, birth defects, mutations, and cancer. D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA.
