[Unilateral aphakia in childhood (author's transl)]. 1975

H Flick

The monocular and binocular vision will always be disturbed after unilateral cataract extraction in childhood. The treatment therefore not only means operation, but also correction of the optic error, pleoptics and orthoptics. In 40 cases of unilateral aphakia (12 congenital, 28 traumatical) the prognosis depends on the age of the individual and maintenance of treatment. The older the child and the sooner therapy is started the better are the functional results.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007908 Lens, Crystalline A transparent, biconvex structure of the EYE, enclosed in a capsule and situated behind the IRIS and in front of the vitreous humor (VITREOUS BODY). It is slightly overlapped at its margin by the ciliary processes. Adaptation by the CILIARY BODY is crucial for OCULAR ACCOMMODATION. Eye Lens,Lens, Eye,Crystalline Lens
D009988 Orthoptics The study and treatment of defects in binocular vision resulting from defects in the optic musculature or of faulty visual habits. It involves a technique of eye exercises designed to correct the visual axes of eyes not properly coordinated for binocular vision. Pleoptics,Orthoptic,Pleoptic
D002387 Cataract Extraction The removal of a cataractous CRYSTALLINE LENS from the eye. Enzymatic Zonulolysis,Phakectomy,Cataract Extractions,Enzymatic Zonulolyses,Extraction, Cataract,Extractions, Cataract,Phakectomies,Zonulolyses, Enzymatic,Zonulolysis, Enzymatic

D000065 Accommodation, Ocular The dioptric adjustment of the EYE (to attain maximal sharpness of retinal imagery for an object of regard) referring to the ability, to the mechanism, or to the process. Ocular accommodation is the effecting of refractive changes by changes in the shape of the CRYSTALLINE LENS. Loosely, it refers to ocular adjustments for VISION, OCULAR at various distances.
