[Influence of thyrocalcitonin on the periodic motor activity of the gastro-intestinal tract]. 1975

N N Lebedev, and A I Briskin

Experiments were conducted on dogs with fistulae of the stomach and various portions of the small intestine in which there was recorded a periodic motor activity. It was shown that intravenous injection of a highly purified bovine thyrocalcitonin (TCT) in doses of 2--10 Units/kg (considerably exceeding the doses used at the clinic in the treatment of patients with bone pathology) caused no changes in a number of indices characterizing the motor periodic activity of the stomach and various portions of the small intestine, despite a distinct reduction (by 10--20%) of the calcium level in the blood serum.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D010507 Periodicity The tendency of a phenomenon to recur at regular intervals; in biological systems, the recurrence of certain activities (including hormonal, cellular, neural) may be annual, seasonal, monthly, daily, or more frequently (ultradian). D002116 Calcitonin A peptide hormone that lowers calcium concentration in the blood. In humans, it is released by thyroid cells and acts to decrease the formation and absorptive activity of osteoclasts. Its role in regulating plasma calcium is much greater in children and in certain diseases than in normal adults. D002118 Calcium A basic element found in nearly all tissues. It is a member of the alkaline earth family of metals with the atomic symbol Ca, atomic number 20, and atomic weight 40. Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the body and combines with phosphorus to form calcium phosphate in the bones and teeth. It is essential for the normal functioning of nerves and muscles and plays a role in blood coagulation (as factor IV) and in many enzymatic processes. D004285 Dogs The domestic dog, Canis familiaris, comprising about 400 breeds, of the carnivore family CANIDAE. They are worldwide in distribution and live in association with people. (Walker's Mammals of the World, 5th ed, p1065) Canis familiaris,Dog
D005769 Gastrointestinal Motility The motor activity of the GASTROINTESTINAL TRACT. Intestinal Motility,Gastrointestinal Motilities,Intestinal Motilities,Motilities, Gastrointestinal,Motilities, Intestinal,Motility, Gastrointestinal,Motility, Intestinal
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA.
