The O-specific polysaccharide of Providencia alcalifaciens O16 was obtained by mild-acid degradation of the lipopolysaccharide and studied by chemical methods and NMR spectroscopy, including 2D 1H,(1)H COSY, TOCSY, NOESY, and 1H,(13)C HSQC experiments. It was found that the polysaccharide contains N-acetylmuramic acid, which was isolated by solvolysis with trifluoromethanesulfonic acid and identified by the specific optical rotation and NMR spectroscopy. The following structure of the trisaccharide repeating-unit of the polysaccharide was established:

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008969 Molecular Sequence Data Descriptions of specific amino acid, carbohydrate, or nucleotide sequences which have appeared in the published literature and/or are deposited in and maintained by databanks such as GENBANK, European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), National Biomedical Research Foundation (NBRF), or other sequence repositories. D009112 Muramic Acids Compounds consisting of glucosamine and lactate joined by an ether linkage. They occur naturally as N-acetyl derivatives in peptidoglycan, the characteristic polysaccharide composing bacterial cell walls. (From Dorland, 28th ed) Muramic Acid,Acid, Muramic,Acids, Muramic
D009904 Optical Rotation The rotation of linearly polarized light as it passes through various media. Optical Activity,Activity, Optical,Rotation, Optical
D011532 Providencia Gram-negative rods isolated from human urine and feces.
D002236 Carbohydrate Conformation The characteristic 3-dimensional shape of a carbohydrate. Carbohydrate Linkage,Carbohydrate Conformations,Carbohydrate Linkages,Conformation, Carbohydrate,Conformations, Carbohydrate,Linkage, Carbohydrate,Linkages, Carbohydrate
D002240 Carbohydrate Sequence The sequence of carbohydrates within POLYSACCHARIDES; GLYCOPROTEINS; and GLYCOLIPIDS. Carbohydrate Sequences,Sequence, Carbohydrate,Sequences, Carbohydrate
D019081 O Antigens The lipopolysaccharide-protein somatic antigens, usually from gram-negative bacteria, important in the serological classification of enteric bacilli. The O-specific chains determine the specificity of the O antigens of a given serotype. O antigens are the immunodominant part of the lipopolysaccharide molecule in the intact bacterial cell.
