The present study aims at comparing the levels of circulating forms of E-selectin, ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 in 10 patients with acute asthma, 10 stable atopic asthmatics, 10 nonatopic stable asthmatics and 10 age-matched healthy children. sE-selectin levels of patients with acute asthma were found to be significantly higher than that of the other three groups. The insignificant rise in sICAM-1 levels was attributed to the usage of inhaler corticosteroids. Serum sE-selectin and sICAM-1 seem to be promising serological markers for monitoring disease activity in childhood asthma.

D005938 Glucocorticoids A group of CORTICOSTEROIDS that affect carbohydrate metabolism (GLUCONEOGENESIS, liver glycogen deposition, elevation of BLOOD SUGAR), inhibit ADRENOCORTICOTROPIC HORMONE secretion, and possess pronounced anti-inflammatory activity. They also play a role in fat and protein metabolism, maintenance of arterial blood pressure, alteration of the connective tissue response to injury, reduction in the number of circulating lymphocytes, and functioning of the central nervous system. D001249 Asthma A form of bronchial disorder with three distinct components: airway hyper-responsiveness (RESPIRATORY HYPERSENSITIVITY), airway INFLAMMATION, and intermittent AIRWAY OBSTRUCTION. It is characterized by spasmodic contraction of airway smooth muscle, WHEEZING, and dyspnea (DYSPNEA, PAROXYSMAL). Asthma, Bronchial,Bronchial Asthma,Asthmas
D018799 Intercellular Adhesion Molecule-1 A cell-surface ligand involved in leukocyte adhesion and inflammation. Its production is induced by gamma-interferon and it is required for neutrophil migration into inflamed tissue. D019010 Vascular Cell Adhesion Molecule-1 Cytokine-induced cell adhesion molecule present on activated endothelial cells, tissue macrophages, dendritic cells, bone marrow fibroblasts, myoblasts, and myotubes. It is important for the recruitment of leukocytes to sites of inflammation.
