The state of art of ultrasound technology has reached a fundamental role, due to the color Doppler methodology, in the study and diagnosis of scrotal pathologies, especially those related to vascular, neopalstic and inflammatory disease. The varicocele is one of the most frequent causes of male infertility, even in the sub-clinical forms. The role of echo-Doppler is to achieve a diagnostic conclusion in the sub-clinical forms, to suggest the type and value of clinical varicocele, to give morphological and structural informations of the scrotal contents, useful for the therapeutic choice and follow-up, to evaluate the therapy success, the eventual persistency or recurrence. Moreover, in the undescended testis the ultrasound technique represents the best non-invasive diagnostic means. This technique allows to disclose the undescended testis, up to the supra-lateral angle of bladder, to evaluate it in both the volumetric and echostructural aspect and to correlate those data to that of contra-lateral normosited testis and to the per age standards. On the other hand, echography results in less utility in the abdominal undescended testis.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008297 Male Males
D003456 Cryptorchidism A developmental defect in which a TESTIS or both TESTES failed to descend from high in the ABDOMEN to the bottom of the SCROTUM. Testicular descent is essential to normal SPERMATOGENESIS which requires temperature lower than the BODY TEMPERATURE. Cryptorchidism can be subclassified by the location of the maldescended testis. D005500 Follow-Up Studies Studies in which individuals or populations are followed to assess the outcome of exposures, procedures, or effects of a characteristic, e.g., occurrence of disease. D012611 Scrotum A cutaneous pouch of skin containing the testicles and spermatic cords. Scrotums
D013737 Testis The male gonad containing two functional parts: the SEMINIFEROUS TUBULES for the production and transport of male germ cells (SPERMATOGENESIS) and the interstitial compartment containing LEYDIG CELLS that produce ANDROGENS. Testicles,Testes,Testicle
D014463 Ultrasonography The visualization of deep structures of the body by recording the reflections or echoes of ultrasonic pulses directed into the tissues. Use of ultrasound for imaging or diagnostic purposes employs frequencies ranging from 1.6 to 10 megahertz. D014646 Varicocele A condition characterized by the dilated tortuous veins of the SPERMATIC CORD with a marked left-sided predominance. Adverse effect on male fertility occurs when varicocele leads to an increased scrotal (and testicular) temperature and reduced testicular volume. Varicoceles
