To examine the effect of the 5'-leader region of mRNAs in regulating translation efficiency, chimeric mRNAs which have various sequences of the 5'-leader were synthesized by the SP6 in vitro transcription system, and translated in the wheat germ in vitro translation system. Translation efficiency was affected by the length of the 5'-leader and the number of the codon A-U-G at the translation initiation site.

D009029 Mosaic Viruses Viruses which produce a mottled appearance of the leaves of plants. Mosaic Virus,Virus, Mosaic,Viruses, Mosaic
D002213 Capsid The outer protein protective shell of a virus, which protects the viral nucleic acid. Capsids are composed of repeating units (capsomers or capsomeres) of CAPSID PROTEINS which when assembled together form either an icosahedral or helical shape. Procapsid,Prohead,Capsids,Procapsids,Proheads
D002678 Chimera An individual that contains cell populations derived from different zygotes. Hybrids,Chimeras,Hybrid
D006041 Goats Any of numerous agile, hollow-horned RUMINANTS of the genus Capra, in the family Bovidae, closely related to the SHEEP. Capra,Capras,Goat
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. Animal,Metazoa,Animalia
D001483 Base Sequence The sequence of PURINES and PYRIMIDINES in nucleic acids and polynucleotides. It is also called nucleotide sequence. D012333 RNA, Messenger RNA sequences that serve as templates for protein synthesis. Bacterial mRNAs are generally primary transcripts in that they do not require post-transcriptional processing. Eukaryotic mRNA is synthesized in the nucleus and must be exported to the cytoplasm for translation. Most eukaryotic mRNAs have a sequence of polyadenylic acid at the 3' end, referred to as the poly(A) tail. The function of this tail is not known for certain, but it may play a role in the export of mature mRNA from the nucleus as well as in helping stabilize some mRNA molecules by retarding their degradation in the cytoplasm. D012367 RNA, Viral Ribonucleic acid that makes up the genetic material of viruses. Viral RNA
