This is the first report of secondary resistance to rifampin following MDT in a patient with prolonged, but irregular treatment. Repeated mouse foot-pad studies demonstrated resistance to dapsone after several years of monotherapy, and following subsequent MDT the studies demonstrated the development of resistance to rifampin.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007917 Leprostatic Agents Substances that suppress Mycobacterium leprae, ameliorate the clinical manifestations of leprosy, and/or reduce the incidence and severity of leprous reactions. Antileprotic Agents,Leprostatics,Agents, Antileprotic,Agents, Leprostatic
D007918 Leprosy A chronic granulomatous infection caused by MYCOBACTERIUM LEPRAE. The granulomatous lesions are manifested in the skin, the mucous membranes, and the peripheral nerves. Two polar or principal types are lepromatous and tuberculoid. Hansen's Disease,Hansen Disease
D008297 Male Males
D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D003622 Dapsone A sulfone active against a wide range of bacteria but mainly employed for its actions against MYCOBACTERIUM LEPRAE. Its mechanism of action is probably similar to that of the SULFONAMIDES which involves inhibition of folic acid synthesis in susceptible organisms. It is also used with PYRIMETHAMINE in the treatment of malaria. (From Martindale, The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 30th ed, p157-8) Diaminodiphenylsulfone,Sulfonyldianiline,4,4'-Diaminophenyl Sulfone,Avlosulfone,DADPS,Dapsoderm-X,Dapson-Fatol,Diaphenylsulfone,Disulone,Sulfona,4,4' Diaminophenyl Sulfone,Sulfone, 4,4'-Diaminophenyl

D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D012293 Rifampin A semisynthetic antibiotic produced from Streptomyces mediterranei. It has a broad antibacterial spectrum, including activity against several forms of Mycobacterium. In susceptible organisms it inhibits DNA-dependent RNA polymerase activity by forming a stable complex with the enzyme. It thus suppresses the initiation of RNA synthesis. Rifampin is bactericidal, and acts on both intracellular and extracellular organisms. (From Gilman et al., Goodman and Gilman's The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics, 9th ed, p1160) Rifampicin,Benemycin,Rifadin,Rimactan,Rimactane,Tubocin
D018432 Drug Resistance, Multiple Simultaneous resistance to several structurally and functionally distinct drugs. Drug Resistance, Extensively,Extensively Drug Resistance,Extensively-Drug Resistance,Multidrug Resistance,Multi-Drug Resistance,Extensively Drug Resistances,Extensively-Drug Resistances,Multiple Drug Resistance,Resistance, Extensively Drug,Resistance, Extensively-Drug,Resistance, Multiple Drug
D024881 Drug Resistance, Bacterial The ability of bacteria to resist or to become tolerant to chemotherapeutic agents, antimicrobial agents, or antibiotics. This resistance may be acquired through gene mutation or foreign DNA in transmissible plasmids (R FACTORS). Antibiotic Resistance, Bacterial,Antibacterial Drug Resistance
