A method for the rapid determination of trace mercury in soil by hydride atomic fluorescence spectrometry is reported in this paper. The sample of soil is leached (at 80 degrees C-100 degrees C) with aqua regia (H2O + aqua regia, 1 + 1). The concentration of KBH4 used in this method is studied. Trace mercury in reference material (polluted farming soil) is determined by the described method too. The result obtained is in good agreement with standard value. The RSD is 1.4% and the recovery of mercury is 87%-105%. This method is proved to be rapid, simple and accurate.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008628 Mercury A silver metallic element that exists as a liquid at room temperature. It has the atomic symbol Hg (from hydrargyrum, liquid silver), atomic number 80, and atomic weight 200.59. Mercury is used in many industrial applications and its salts have been employed therapeutically as purgatives, antisyphilitics, disinfectants, and astringents. It can be absorbed through the skin and mucous membranes which leads to MERCURY POISONING. Because of its toxicity, the clinical use of mercury and mercurials is diminishing.
D012680 Sensitivity and Specificity Binary classification measures to assess test results. Sensitivity or recall rate is the proportion of true positives. Specificity is the probability of correctly determining the absence of a condition. (From Last, Dictionary of Epidemiology, 2d ed) Specificity,Sensitivity,Specificity and Sensitivity
