The concentration of sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) in blood depends on the sex, age, metabolic status of the organism, liver function, and gonad function. The circadian rhythm of somatotropin secretion is an important regulator of SHBG synthesis and secretion, and its passage from vascular bed to the tissues depends on somatomedin-C. The concentration of SHBG in the serum is thus the resultant of the synthesis of this glycoprotein in the liver and the ability of its uptake in the cells of target tissues for sex hormones.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007334 Insulin-Like Growth Factor I A well-characterized basic peptide believed to be secreted by the liver and to circulate in the blood. It has growth-regulating, insulin-like, and mitogenic activities. This growth factor has a major, but not absolute, dependence on GROWTH HORMONE. It is believed to be mainly active in adults in contrast to INSULIN-LIKE GROWTH FACTOR II, which is a major fetal growth factor. D008099 Liver A large lobed glandular organ in the abdomen of vertebrates that is responsible for detoxification, metabolism, synthesis and storage of various substances. Livers
D002940 Circadian Rhythm The regular recurrence, in cycles of about 24 hours, of biological processes or activities, such as sensitivity to drugs or environmental and physiological stimuli. D012738 Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin A glycoprotein migrating as a beta-globulin. Its molecular weight, 52,000 or 95,000-115,000, indicates that it exists as a dimer. The protein binds testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, and estradiol in the plasma. Sex hormone-binding protein has the same amino acid sequence as ANDROGEN-BINDING PROTEIN. They differ by their sites of synthesis and post-translational oligosaccharide modifications. D013006 Growth Hormone A polypeptide that is secreted by the adenohypophysis (PITUITARY GLAND, ANTERIOR). Growth hormone, also known as somatotropin, stimulates mitosis, cell differentiation and cell growth. Species-specific growth hormones have been synthesized.
