[Adenoma of the pigmented ciliary epithelium (author's transl)]. 1976

G Naumann, and H E Völcker, and W Lerche

A solid adenoma of the pigmented ciliary epithelium was removed by 9.0 X 6.0 mm "block-excision" (postoperative visual acuity 1.0). The black lesion with a velvety surface consists of very large cells packed with melanin granules of abnormal and variable density, structure and size. Striking intracellular vacuoles contain acid mucopolysaccharides, particularly sialomucins. The literature on tumors of the pigmented ciliary epithelium is reviewed. Criteria for the separation of adenomas for adeno- "carcinomas" (8 cases, all without metastases) from reactive hyperplasia (6 cases) are proposed. The histologic, histochemical and electronmicroscopic findings of our tumor show striking similarities to those of an adenoma of the retinal pigment epithelium.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D006965 Hyperplasia An increase in the number of cells in a tissue or organ without tumor formation. It differs from HYPERTROPHY, which is an increase in bulk without an increase in the number of cells. Hyperplasias
D008543 Melanins Insoluble polymers of TYROSINE derivatives found in and causing darkness in skin (SKIN PIGMENTATION), hair, and feathers providing protection against SUNBURN induced by SUNLIGHT. CAROTENES contribute yellow and red coloration. Allomelanins,Melanin,Phaeomelanins
D010857 Pigment Epithelium of Eye The layer of pigment-containing epithelial cells in the RETINA; the CILIARY BODY; and the IRIS in the eye. Eye Pigment Epithelium
D002924 Ciliary Body A ring of tissue extending from the scleral spur to the ora serrata of the RETINA. It consists of the uveal portion and the epithelial portion. The ciliary muscle is in the uveal portion and the ciliary processes are in the epithelial portion. D005134 Eye Neoplasms Tumors or cancer of the EYE. Cancer of Eye,Eye Cancer,Cancer of the Eye,Neoplasms, Eye,Cancer, Eye,Cancers, Eye,Eye Cancers,Eye Neoplasm,Neoplasm, Eye
D005260 Female Females
D006025 Glycosaminoglycans Heteropolysaccharides which contain an N-acetylated hexosamine in a characteristic repeating disaccharide unit. The repeating structure of each disaccharide involves alternate 1,4- and 1,3-linkages consisting of either N-acetylglucosamine (see ACETYLGLUCOSAMINE) or N-acetylgalactosamine (see ACETYLGALACTOSAMINE). Glycosaminoglycan,Mucopolysaccharides
D006651 Histocytochemistry Study of intracellular distribution of chemicals, reaction sites, enzymes, etc., by means of staining reactions, radioactive isotope uptake, selective metal distribution in electron microscopy, or other methods. Cytochemistry
D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
