We investigated the activity of peptidases in the serum of mice with experimental polyarthritis that was induced by the injection of type II collagen, an experimental model of human rheumatoid arthritis. The activity of dipeptidyl peptidase II (DPP II) was increased and that of dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP IV) was decreased resulting in the significant increase of the serum DPP II/DPP IV ratio in the polyarthritic mice compared with that of controls. These results indicate that the DPP II/DPP IV ratio is a novel index of disease activity in mice with collagen-induced polyarthritis and may be useful in assessing the activity of rheumatoid arthritis in humans.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007114 Immunization Deliberate stimulation of the host's immune response. ACTIVE IMMUNIZATION involves administration of ANTIGENS or IMMUNOLOGIC ADJUVANTS. PASSIVE IMMUNIZATION involves administration of IMMUNE SERA or LYMPHOCYTES or their extracts (e.g., transfer factor, immune RNA) or transplantation of immunocompetent cell producing tissue (thymus or bone marrow). D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. D018819 Dipeptidyl Peptidase 4 A serine protease that catalyses the release of an N-terminal dipeptide. Several biologically-active peptides have been identified as dipeptidyl peptidase 4 substrates including INCRETINS; NEUROPEPTIDES; and CHEMOKINES. The protein is also found bound to ADENOSINE DEAMINASE on the T-CELL surface and is believed to play a role in T-cell activation.
