Sister-chromatid exchange (SCE) analysis was carried out in 67 operating room personnel (anaesthetists M.D.; anaesthesia nurses and anaesthesia unit technicians) exposed to waste anaesthetic gases such as halothane, nitrous oxide and isoflurane and in 50 healthy unexposed controls. The SCE frequencies were increased significantly in operating room personnel as compared to controls. A significant increase in SCEs was found in non-smoking operating room personnel as compared to non-smoking controls. This study supports the existence of an association between occupational exposure to mutagens and an increase in SCEs in lymphocytes.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007530 Isoflurane A stable, non-explosive inhalation anesthetic, relatively free from significant side effects.
D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D009152 Mutagenicity Tests Tests of chemical substances and physical agents for mutagenic potential. They include microbial, insect, mammalian cell, and whole animal tests. D009609 Nitrous Oxide Nitrogen oxide (N2O). A colorless, odorless gas that is used as an anesthetic and analgesic. High concentrations cause a narcotic effect and may replace oxygen, causing death by asphyxia. It is also used as a food aerosol in the preparation of whipping cream. Laughing Gas,Nitrogen Protoxide,Gas, Laughing,Oxide, Nitrous
D009873 Operating Rooms Facilities equipped for performing surgery. Operating Room,Room, Operating,Rooms, Operating
D010564 Personnel, Hospital The individuals employed by the hospital. Hospital Personnel
D006221 Halothane A nonflammable, halogenated, hydrocarbon anesthetic that provides relatively rapid induction with little or no excitement. Analgesia may not be adequate. NITROUS OXIDE is often given concomitantly. Because halothane may not produce sufficient muscle relaxation, supplemental neuromuscular blocking agents may be required. (From AMA Drug Evaluations Annual, 1994, p178) 1,1,1-Trifluoro-2-Chloro-2-Bromoethane,Fluothane,Ftorotan,Narcotan
D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D000328 Adult A person having attained full growth or maturity. Adults are of 19 through 44 years of age. For a person between 19 and 24 years of age, YOUNG ADULT is available. Adults
D012854 Sister Chromatid Exchange An exchange of segments between the sister chromatids of a chromosome, either between the sister chromatids of a meiotic tetrad or between the sister chromatids of a duplicated somatic chromosome. Its frequency is increased by ultraviolet and ionizing radiation and other mutagenic agents and is particularly high in BLOOM SYNDROME.
