T1 bacteriophage production in Escherichia coli 1963

Feiner, Rose R. (Columbia University, New York, N.Y.) and Solon A. Ellison. T1 bacteriophage production in Escherichia coli. J. Bacteriol. 85:7-11. 1963.-Progeny released from complexes formed between unirradiated Escherichia coli strain Bs-1 and ultraviolet (UV)-irradiated phage T1 were equally infective for strains B and Bs-1, and were therefore not hostmodified. The capacity of Bs-1 for unirradiated or irradiated T1 is relatively insensitive to UV irradiation, as compared with that of strains B and B/r. In all three strains of E. coli, B, B/r, and Bs-1, the UV sensitivity of the capacity for phage T1 is independent of the UV sensitivity of colony-forming ability. These findings are discussed in relation to the partial genetic homology hypothesis.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D003090 Coliphages Viruses whose host is Escherichia coli. Escherichia coli Phages,Coliphage,Escherichia coli Phage,Phage, Escherichia coli,Phages, Escherichia coli
D004926 Escherichia coli A species of gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, rod-shaped bacteria (GRAM-NEGATIVE FACULTATIVELY ANAEROBIC RODS) commonly found in the lower part of the intestine of warm-blooded animals. It is usually nonpathogenic, but some strains are known to produce DIARRHEA and pyogenic infections. Pathogenic strains (virotypes) are classified by their specific pathogenic mechanisms such as toxins (ENTEROTOXIGENIC ESCHERICHIA COLI), etc. Alkalescens-Dispar Group,Bacillus coli,Bacterium coli,Bacterium coli commune,Diffusely Adherent Escherichia coli,E coli,EAggEC,Enteroaggregative Escherichia coli,Enterococcus coli,Diffusely Adherent E. coli,Enteroaggregative E. coli,Enteroinvasive E. coli,Enteroinvasive Escherichia coli
D014466 Ultraviolet Rays That portion of the electromagnetic spectrum immediately below the visible range and extending into the x-ray frequencies. The longer wavelengths (near-UV or biotic or vital rays) are necessary for the endogenous synthesis of vitamin D and are also called antirachitic rays; the shorter, ionizing wavelengths (far-UV or abiotic or extravital rays) are viricidal, bactericidal, mutagenic, and carcinogenic and are used as disinfectants. D017906 Siphoviridae A family of BACTERIOPHAGES and ARCHAEAL VIRUSES which are characterized by long, non-contractile tails. Enterobacteria phage BF23,Phages, T5-like,Phages, lambda-Like,T5-like Phages,T5-like viruses,lambda-Like Phages,lambda-like viruses,Syphoviridae,Phages, T5 like,T5 like viruses, lambda Like Phages, lambda like viruses
