OBJECTIVE To study the lignans from Patrinia scabra Bunge. METHODS The constituents were separated and purified by column chromatography with silical gel, RP-silical gel and Sephadex LH-20. Their structures were identified on the basis of spectral data (IR, MS, 1HNMR, 13CNMR, HMQC and HMBC). CONCLUSIONS A new lignan was obtained and its structure was elucidated as 4-[1-ethoxyl-1-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxy)benzyl]methyl- 2-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxy)benzyl-3-hydroxymethyl-tetrahydro-furan (2), along with three known lignans, lariciresinol (1), isolariciresinol (3) and nortracheloside (4).

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008031 Lignin The most abundant natural aromatic organic polymer found in all vascular plants. Lignin together with cellulose and hemicellulose are the major cell wall components of the fibers of all wood and grass species. Lignin is composed of coniferyl, p-coumaryl, and sinapyl alcohols in varying ratios in different plant species. (From Merck Index, 11th ed) Lignins
D009284 Naphthols Naphthalene derivatives carrying one or more hydroxyl (-OH) groups at any ring position. They are often used in dyes and pigments, as antioxidants for rubber, fats, and oils, as insecticides, in pharmaceuticals, and in numerous other applications. Hydroxynaphthalene,Hydroxynaphthalenes,Naphthol

D005663 Furans Compounds with a 5-membered ring of four carbons and an oxygen. They are aromatic heterocycles. The reduced form is tetrahydrofuran. Tetrahydrofurans
D006139 Guaiacol An agent thought to have disinfectant properties and used as an expectorant. (From Martindale, The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 30th ed, p747) 2-Hydroxy-Anisole,2-Hydroxyanisole,2-Methoxy-Phenol,2-Methoxyphenol,Guaicol,Methyl Catechol,Catechol, Methyl
D015394 Molecular Structure The location of the atoms, groups or ions relative to one another in a molecule, as well as the number, type and location of covalent bonds. Structure, Molecular,Molecular Structures,Structures, Molecular
D017705 Lignans A class of dibenzylbutane derivatives which occurs in higher plants and in fluids (bile, serum, urine, etc.) in man and other animals. These compounds, which have a potential anti-cancer role, can be synthesized in vitro by human fecal flora. (From Singleton & Sainsbury, Dictionary of Microbiology and Molecular Biology, 2d ed) Lignan,Neolignan,Neolignans
D018517 Plant Roots The usually underground portions of a plant that serve as support, store food, and through which water and mineral nutrients enter the plant.
