OBJECTIVE To detail the life and achievements of Levi Cooper Lane, MD, author of the first American textbook on surgery of the head and neck. METHODS Literature search and analysis. CONCLUSIONS While some of Lane's observations have been diluted by the passage of time, the lessons imparted by his life and work merit continued study by contemporary head and neck surgeons.
