Influence of low birth weight on subsequent reproductive performance of female rats. 1992

Female rats which were born underweight had lower absolute body mass throughout the whole experimental period than female litter mates with normal birth weight (controls). Their reproductive performance observed during three consecutive pregnancies was not different from that of controls except for lower litter size in the 1st pregnancy. Thus at least for rats, low spontaneous birth weight of females does not indicate subsequent poor pregnancy outcome.
