In 30 patients suffering from cerebrovascular disease stage I with atherosclerotic plaques in the carotid's bifurcation the effect of a 7-days application with 400 mg Naftidrofuryl versus NaCl was tested. As parameters viscosity and elasticity of whole blood, plasma viscosity, erythrocytes' and membrane fluidity point, as well as platelet aggregation (spontaneous, ADP-, Epinephrine- and Collagen-induced) were determined before onset, after 4 days and after 8 days. After 8 days treatment with naftidrofuryl there was a significant improvement in viscosity and elasticity of whole blood as well as in erythrocytes' elongation, membrane-fluidity and in the induced test of platelet aggregation.

D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D009257 Nafronyl A drug used in the management of peripheral and cerebral vascular disorders. It is claimed to enhance cellular oxidative capacity and to be a spasmolytic. (From Martindale, The Extra Pharmacopoeia, 30th ed, p1310) It may also be an antagonist at 5HT-2 serotonin receptors. D010865 Pilot Projects Small-scale tests of methods and procedures to be used on a larger scale if the pilot study demonstrates that these methods and procedures can work. Pilot Studies,Pilot Study,Pilot Project,Project, Pilot,Projects, Pilot,Studies, Pilot,Study, Pilot
D010974 Platelet Aggregation The attachment of PLATELETS to one another. This clumping together can be induced by a number of agents (e.g., THROMBIN; COLLAGEN) and is part of the mechanism leading to the formation of a THROMBUS. Aggregation, Platelet
D001809 Blood Viscosity The internal resistance of the BLOOD to shear forces. The in vitro measure of whole blood viscosity is of limited clinical utility because it bears little relationship to the actual viscosity within the circulation, but an increase in the viscosity of circulating blood can contribute to morbidity in patients suffering from disorders such as SICKLE CELL ANEMIA and POLYCYTHEMIA. D002546 Ischemic Attack, Transient Brief reversible episodes of focal, nonconvulsive ischemic dysfunction of the brain having a duration of less than 24 hours, and usually less than one hour, caused by transient thrombotic or embolic blood vessel occlusion or stenosis. Events may be classified by arterial distribution, temporal pattern, or etiology (e.g., embolic vs. thrombotic).
