Hepatitis B virus (HBV) mutants have recently been identified in patients with acute and chronic HBV infection. They accumulate during the natural course of infection and may eventually constitute the major or only viral species. Mutations have been detected in all viral genes (except the X-gene) and may be associated with a specific clinical course of the infection, e.g., chronic active or fulminant hepatitis. The exact contribution of mutations to the natural clinical course of HBV infection remains to be established, however.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D009154 Mutation Any detectable and heritable change in the genetic material that causes a change in the GENOTYPE and which is transmitted to daughter cells and to succeeding generations. Mutations
D005814 Genes, Viral The functional hereditary units of VIRUSES. Viral Genes,Gene, Viral,Viral Gene
D006511 Hepatitis B Antigens Antigens of the virion of the HEPATITIS B VIRUS or the Dane particle, its surface (HEPATITIS B SURFACE ANTIGENS), core (HEPATITIS B CORE ANTIGENS), and other associated antigens, including the HEPATITIS B E ANTIGENS. D006515 Hepatitis B virus The type species of the genus ORTHOHEPADNAVIRUS which causes human HEPATITIS B and is also apparently a causal agent in human HEPATOCELLULAR CARCINOMA. The Dane particle is an intact hepatitis virion, named after its discoverer. Non-infectious spherical and tubular particles are also seen in the serum.
