OBJECTIVE To assess blood flow in eye arteries using ultrasounds in patients with myopia, and to correlate the blood flow with refractive error. METHODS Doppler ultrasonography was performed in 38 patients, age 31-50 years old, with myopia ranging from -2.0 to -25.0 D. Control group consisted of age matched emmetropic patients. RESULTS Statistically significant decrease of Vs correlated to the value of refractive error was shown. CONCLUSIONS In myopic eyes blood flow decreases with the increase of the refractive error.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008297 Male Males
D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D009216 Myopia A refractive error in which rays of light entering the EYE parallel to the optic axis are brought to a focus in front of the RETINA when accommodation (ACCOMMODATION, OCULAR) is relaxed. This results from an overly curved CORNEA or from the eyeball being too long from front to back. It is also called nearsightedness. Nearsightedness,Myopias,Nearsightednesses
D009880 Ophthalmic Artery Artery originating from the internal carotid artery and distributing to the eye, orbit and adjacent facial structures. Arteries, Ophthalmic,Artery, Ophthalmic,Ophthalmic Arteries
D012039 Regional Blood Flow The flow of BLOOD through or around an organ or region of the body. Blood Flow, Regional,Blood Flows, Regional,Flow, Regional Blood,Flows, Regional Blood,Regional Blood Flows
D012161 Retinal Artery Central retinal artery and its branches. It arises from the ophthalmic artery, pierces the optic nerve and runs through its center, enters the eye through the porus opticus and branches to supply the retina. D005123 Eye The organ of sight constituting a pair of globular organs made up of a three-layered roughly spherical structure specialized for receiving and responding to light. Eyes
