We report a patient with a chronic intramedullary spinal cord abscess who suffered an episode of acute meningitis due to rupture of the abscess into the subarachnoid space.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008279 Magnetic Resonance Imaging Non-invasive method of demonstrating internal anatomy based on the principle that atomic nuclei in a strong magnetic field absorb pulses of radiofrequency energy and emit them as radiowaves which can be reconstructed into computerized images. The concept includes proton spin tomographic techniques. D008582 Meningitis, Aseptic A syndrome characterized by headache, neck stiffness, low grade fever, and CSF lymphocytic pleocytosis in the absence of an acute bacterial pathogen. Viral meningitis is the most frequent cause although MYCOPLASMA INFECTIONS; RICKETTSIA INFECTIONS; diagnostic or therapeutic procedures; NEOPLASTIC PROCESSES; septic perimeningeal foci; and other conditions may result in this syndrome. D000038 Abscess Accumulation of purulent material in tissues, organs, or circumscribed spaces, usually associated with signs of infection. Abscesses
D012422 Rupture, Spontaneous Tear or break of an organ, vessel or other soft part of the body, occurring in the absence of external force. Ruptures, Spontaneous,Spontaneous Rupture,Spontaneous Ruptures
D013118 Spinal Cord Diseases Pathologic conditions which feature SPINAL CORD damage or dysfunction, including disorders involving the meninges and perimeningeal spaces surrounding the spinal cord. Traumatic injuries, vascular diseases, infections, and inflammatory/autoimmune processes may affect the spinal cord.
