BACKGROUND The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of exposure to lead and cadmium on concentrations of some lipids, lipid peroxidation, enzymatic and non-enzymatic efficiency of antioxidants in the rat brain as well as the effect of combined exposure to metals on the lipid parameters and the activity of antioxidative system. The authors also compared the results in order to detect interactions between these two heavy metals. METHODS The study used the model of chronic, sub-clinical intoxication of lead and/or cadmium in Buffalo rats. RESULTS The tests involved the determination of lead and cadmium concentrations in the rat blood, superoxide dismutase activity, total cholesterol, lipid peroxides, and levels of vitamins C and E in tissue homogenates. CONCLUSIONS Single and combined exposures to small doses of lead and cadmium in rats results in the changed parameters showing the stimulation of lipid peroxidation and antioxidative system along with interactions in their influence.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007854 Lead A soft, grayish metal with poisonous salts; atomic number 82, atomic weight 207.2, symbol Pb.
D008054 Lipid Peroxides Peroxides produced in the presence of a free radical by the oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids in the cell in the presence of molecular oxygen. The formation of lipid peroxides results in the destruction of the original lipid leading to the loss of integrity of the membranes. They therefore cause a variety of toxic effects in vivo and their formation is considered a pathological process in biological systems. Their formation can be inhibited by antioxidants, such as vitamin E, structural separation or low oxygen tension. D001921 Brain The part of CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM that is contained within the skull (CRANIUM). Arising from the NEURAL TUBE, the embryonic brain is comprised of three major parts including PROSENCEPHALON (the forebrain); MESENCEPHALON (the midbrain); and RHOMBENCEPHALON (the hindbrain). The developed brain consists of CEREBRUM; CEREBELLUM; and other structures in the BRAIN STEM. Encephalon
D002104 Cadmium An element with atomic symbol Cd, atomic number 48, and atomic weight 112.41. It is a metal and ingestion will lead to CADMIUM POISONING.
D002784 Cholesterol The principal sterol of all higher animals, distributed in body tissues, especially the brain and spinal cord, and in animal fats and oils. Epicholesterol
D004781 Environmental Exposure The exposure to potentially harmful chemical, physical, or biological agents in the environment or to environmental factors that may include ionizing radiation, pathogenic organisms, or toxic chemicals. D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA.
