Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, National Center for Child Health and Development.

Bone mineral density (BMD) is reduced in children with growth hormone deficiency. Long-term GH therapy has been shown to increase BMD and levels of biochemical markers of bone turnovre. Adequate GH replacement therapy should be performed, starting as early as possible and optimizing treatment with adequate dose to achieve normal BMD at the time of reaching final height.
