The authors studied thyroid function by dosage of total T3 and T4, corresponding free portions, thyroid binding globulin (TBG), thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and reverse T3 (rT3) in 68 clinically euthyroid patients, treated with amiodarone, divided in two groups including 25 subjects treated for less than one month and 43 subjects in therapy for more than one month. The data obtained in the first group have been compared with the second one and with data obtained in a group of 40 healthy subjects. The statistical analysis of results showed a reduction of total T3 and free T3 and an increase of TSH, total T4, free T4 and rT3 in each of two groups of treated patients compared with control group, while there was no difference in comparison between the two treated group.

D000638 Amiodarone An antianginal and class III antiarrhythmic drug. It increases the duration of ventricular and atrial muscle action by inhibiting POTASSIUM CHANNELS and VOLTAGE-GATED SODIUM CHANNELS. There is a resulting decrease in heart rate and in vascular resistance. D013961 Thyroid Gland A highly vascularized endocrine gland consisting of two lobes joined by a thin band of tissue with one lobe on each side of the TRACHEA. It secretes THYROID HORMONES from the follicular cells and CALCITONIN from the parafollicular cells thereby regulating METABOLISM and CALCIUM level in blood, respectively. D013963 Thyroid Hormones Natural hormones secreted by the THYROID GLAND, such as THYROXINE, and their synthetic analogs. Thyroid Hormone,Hormone, Thyroid,Hormones, Thyroid
D013972 Thyrotropin A glycoprotein hormone secreted by the adenohypophysis (PITUITARY GLAND, ANTERIOR). Thyrotropin stimulates THYROID GLAND by increasing the iodide transport, synthesis and release of thyroid hormones (THYROXINE and TRIIODOTHYRONINE). Thyrotropin consists of two noncovalently linked subunits, alpha and beta. Within a species, the alpha subunit is common in the pituitary glycoprotein hormones (TSH; LUTEINIZING HORMONE and FSH), but the beta subunit is unique and confers its biological specificity.
