[A nerve root anomaly with lumbar disc prolapse. Report of a case (author's transl)]. 1979

J Y de la Caffinière, and M Bex, and J M Bruch, and M J Muller

A case of sciatica with partial paralysis of both lower limbs is reported. At operation a prolapse of the L4/5 intervertebral disc on the right side was associated with an anomaly of the left fifth lumbar root which was lower and more horizontal than normal. The authors give a short review of the literature.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007405 Intervertebral Disc Displacement An INTERVERTEBRAL DISC in which the NUCLEUS PULPOSUS has protruded through surrounding ANNULUS FIBROSUS. This occurs most frequently in the lower lumbar region. D010243 Paralysis A general term most often used to describe severe or complete loss of muscle strength due to motor system disease from the level of the cerebral cortex to the muscle fiber. This term may also occasionally refer to a loss of sensory function. D012585 Sciatica A condition characterized by pain radiating from the back into the buttock and posterior/lateral aspects of the leg. Sciatica may be a manifestation of SCIATIC NEUROPATHY; RADICULOPATHY (involving the SPINAL NERVE ROOTS; L4, L5, S1, or S2, often associated with INTERVERTEBRAL DISK DISPLACEMENT); or lesions of the CAUDA EQUINA. D013126 Spinal Nerve Roots Paired bundles of NERVE FIBERS entering and leaving the SPINAL CORD at each segment. The dorsal and ventral nerve roots join to form the mixed segmental spinal nerves. The dorsal roots are generally afferent, formed by the central projections of the spinal (dorsal root) ganglia sensory cells, and the ventral roots are efferent, comprising the axons of spinal motor and PREGANGLIONIC AUTONOMIC FIBERS.
