Ureteral replacement with a new prosthesis. 1979

B Schreiber, and W Homann, and M Mlynek, and P Mellin

A new flexible silicone ureteral prosthesis has been developed and implanted by a new technique in 20 miniature pigs. The improved implantation technique and the results are described. All prostheses remained firmly attached in their position and drained the upper urine collecting system adequately during an observation period up to 12 mos. Leakage, incrustation, dislocation or rejection did not occur. The promising results encouraged us to continue our investigations to get long term experience for clinical trial in human patients for whom nephrostomy is the alternative.

D011474 Prosthesis Design The plan and delineation of prostheses in general or a specific prosthesis. Design, Prosthesis,Designs, Prosthesis,Prosthesis Designs
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. D012826 Silicone Elastomers Polymers of silicone that are formed by crosslinking and treatment with amorphous silica to increase strength. They have properties similar to vulcanized natural rubber, in that they stretch under tension, retract rapidly, and fully recover to their original dimensions upon release. They are used in the encapsulation of surgical membranes and implants. Elastomers, Silicone,Rubber Silicone,Silicone Rubber,Elastosil,Microfil,SE-30,Elastosils,Microfils,SE 30,SE30,Silicone Elastomer
D013232 Steel A tough, malleable, iron-based alloy containing up to, but no more than, two percent carbon and often other metals. It is used in medicine and dentistry in implants and instrumentation. Steels
D013552 Swine Any of various animals that constitute the family Suidae and comprise stout-bodied, short-legged omnivorous mammals with thick skin, usually covered with coarse bristles, a rather long mobile snout, and small tail. Included are the genera Babyrousa, Phacochoerus (wart hogs), and Sus, the latter containing the domestic pig (see SUS SCROFA). D013784 Textiles Filament or fiber, or the materials generated from them by weaving, embroidery, knitting, crocheting, tufting, or felting such as yarn, thread, cording, rope, netting, lace, or sheets of cloth or fabric. Textile
D014513 Ureter One of a pair of thick-walled tubes that transports urine from the KIDNEY PELVIS to the URINARY BLADDER. Ureters
D019736 Prostheses and Implants Artificial substitutes for body parts, and materials inserted into tissue for functional, cosmetic, or therapeutic purposes. Prostheses can be functional, as in the case of artificial arms and legs, or cosmetic, as in the case of an artificial eye. Implants, all surgically inserted or grafted into the body, tend to be used therapeutically. IMPLANTS, EXPERIMENTAL is available for those used experimentally.
