BACKGROUND The incidence of paraneoplastic syndromes varies with tumor histology. Uterine sarcomas rarely cause paraneoplastic syndromes. Furthermore, paraneoplastic encephalomyelitis has never been reported to accompany a uterine leiomyosarcoma. METHODS A 44-year-old female developed an ANNA-1 paraneoplastic encephalomyelitis after a diagnosis of a uterine leiomyosarcoma. CONCLUSIONS Paraneoplastic encephalomyelitis usually causes progressive neurologic decline. Treatment rarely alters this course.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007890 Leiomyosarcoma A sarcoma containing large spindle cells of smooth muscle. Although it rarely occurs in soft tissue, it is common in the viscera. It is the most common soft tissue sarcoma of the gastrointestinal tract and uterus. The median age of patients is 60 years. D020361 Paraneoplastic Syndromes, Nervous System Degenerative or inflammatory conditions affecting the central or peripheral nervous system that develop in association with a systemic neoplasm without direct invasion by tumor.
