Genes conferring simultaneous resistance to different classes of antimicrobials, confer a selective advantage to the host, particularly when those corresponding antibiotics are administered. Multiple resistance genes clustered within the same genetic locus (resistance island) can be transferred en bloc to other organisms. In this chapter we review novel multidrug resistance islands recently described in Salmonella.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D011815 R Factors A class of plasmids that transfer antibiotic resistance from one bacterium to another by conjugation. R Factor,R Plasmid,R Plasmids,Resistance Factor,Resistance Factors,Factor, R,Factor, Resistance,Factors, R,Factors, Resistance,Plasmid, R,Plasmids, R
D002876 Chromosomes, Bacterial Structures within the nucleus of bacterial cells consisting of or containing DNA, which carry genetic information essential to the cell. Bacterial Chromosome,Bacterial Chromosomes,Chromosome, Bacterial
D005798 Genes, Bacterial The functional hereditary units of BACTERIA. Bacterial Gene,Bacterial Genes,Gene, Bacterial
D005810 Multigene Family A set of genes descended by duplication and variation from some ancestral gene. Such genes may be clustered together on the same chromosome or dispersed on different chromosomes. Examples of multigene families include those that encode the hemoglobins, immunoglobulins, histocompatibility antigens, actins, tubulins, keratins, collagens, heat shock proteins, salivary glue proteins, chorion proteins, cuticle proteins, yolk proteins, and phaseolins, as well as histones, ribosomal RNA, and transfer RNA genes. The latter three are examples of reiterated genes, where hundreds of identical genes are present in a tandem array. D012475 Salmonella A genus of gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, rod-shaped bacteria that utilizes citrate as a sole carbon source. It is pathogenic for humans, causing enteric fevers, gastroenteritis, and bacteremia. Food poisoning is the most common clinical manifestation. Organisms within this genus are separated on the basis of antigenic characteristics, sugar fermentation patterns, and bacteriophage susceptibility.
D024901 Drug Resistance, Multiple, Bacterial The ability of bacteria to resist or to become tolerant to several structurally and functionally distinct drugs simultaneously. This resistance may be acquired through gene mutation or foreign DNA in transmissible plasmids (R FACTORS).
